The Academy

Upstairs Architects was commissioned by Durkan Estates to convert the Grade II* Listed Central Parade Building to contemporary loft apartments, following an invited competition. The building was originally constructed in 1806, designed by James Wyatt in the ‘Gothic style’, as the centre piece of the Royal Military Academy. The four turrets reference the design of the Tower of London. Our proposals for ten apartments create stunning spaces within the lofty volumes of the original classrooms, with the careful insertion of contemporary steel and glass mezzanines and stairs, whilst also retaining the existing historic features. The first floor apartments include a three level master bedroom within the turrets, the bathroom open to the underside of the exposed timber roof of the turrets. There are striking views from the upper rooms across the Academy’s cricket pitch to Central London.
